    Sicily

Sicily, an autonomous Italian region and the largest island on the Mediterranean Sea, is a popular travel destination among tourists to Italy. Perhaps the reason why Sicily is almost always on the list of destinations to travel to for tourists going to Italy is that Sicily has a lot of beautiful things to offer. From its natural beauty and dramatic landscapes, to its ancient historical past, and to its rich culture and traditions, Sicily has a character that is uniquely its own.  Nowhere in Italy can a culture such as the Sicilian culture be found.

Holiday travel to Sicily is best done slowly, for a period of no less than two weeks, so that all the flavors it has to offer as a tourist destination can be fully savored.  However, if your time for travel in Sicily is somewhat limited, here are the destinations that you should not miss when you go to Sicily.

Agrigento (pictured). Agrigento was one of the major colonies of Greece during the Hellenic times.  Visitors to Sicily love this city because of its charming old town that still whispers of its Greek past. The city is a major travel destination because of the seven temples in the Valley of Temples just outside its boundaries.

Palermo.  Palermo is the capital city of Sicily.  Tourists travel to Palermo to see the city's interesting mix of architectural vistas, with its touches of Greek, Roman, Norman and Arabic. One of the architectural wonders of this tourist destination is the Palazzo dei Normanni, considered to be one of the most beautiful palaces not just in Sicily but also in the whole of Italy.

Taormina. Taormina is another popular tourist destination mainly because of the beauty of its natural environment. Taormina stands at the foot of Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, and the city offers dramatic views of this volcano. Another reason why tourists are drawn to this part of Sicily is its lovely Mediterranean beaches.

The Aeolian Islands.  The Aeolian Islands is a favorite destination among beach lovers. These islands lie to the north of Sicily on the Tyrrhenian Sea. These islands are great for swimming and diving. Another crowd that is drawn to this destination is the volcanologists who wish to see the little volcano in Stromboli, which is always active and erupting.

Sicily is a favorite destination among tourists to Italy because it is beautiful and it is rich in culture.
